If your social media timeline was filled with people vacationing in Bali towards the end of the year, it’s likely they’re part of more than 366,000 people who visited the province for the Christmas and New Year holidays.
Specifically, according to the provincial government, a whopping 366,666 people visited Bali between Dec. 17 and Jan. 3.
At a press conference yesterday, Bali Governor Wayan Koster said there hasn’t been any significant increase in COVID-19 cases on the island yet, noting that most tourism spots had implemented the necessary health protocols (that may be true for now, but should there be any holiday clusters they are likely to surface in the coming days).
During the occasion, Koster also noted high compliance for mask wearing and physical distancing in Bali, which was reportedly at around 96 percent and nearly 92 percent, respectively.
“We achieved a good performance in handling COVID-19, let’s hope it will build trust among local residents, [and at the] national and international [level], so we can optimistically revive Bali’s tourism and economy,” Koster said.
Today, the central government announced tighter restrictions in high-risk COVID-19 regions, which include Denpasar and Badung regency in Bali, starting from Jan. 11 to 25.
Indonesia set a new daily record today with 8,854 cases, taking the country’s total to 788,402.
